I went through a similar phase 12 years ago, after receiving over 100 books for review, completing 90% of them, writing 80% of the reviews, and burning out. For those that wonder, 10% of the books were did-not-finish titles, and were auctioned off for charity. I was looking back on that time and wonder if it would have been better spent with my kids, my own writing, or developing some other skill. I’ve never read like that since, and I probably won’t again. Sadly, the editing has also taken me a step further from reading for pleasure, but in exchange I’ve found that I enjoy the novels I’m editing more.

In particular, the most recent edits I’ve done were on a trilogy that will be re-released from a notable publisher sometime in the future. I can not give this author enough credit, and I believe his work with the story arcs in these novels are rivaling those done by Stephen King in The Stand. Once I have print copies – and I will be ordering print copies when they are released – I have no doubt they will put in a hard run against The Stand on my shelf.

Another recent job included a YA novel set in what I am sure is Vancouver (BC). I could be wrong, but I’m thinking it’s Van-city. Anyway, I don’t even know who the author is – the client hasn’t given me that information yet – but I’m sure she (or he) is going to be well-received. I was immediately drawn into the main character’s life, and in only 10 hours of reading/edits, I was done. It is a brilliant piece of work, and not at all as sparkly or angsty as most YA I’ve read since the early days of Twilight.

I guess that really isn’t a fair comparison, as this YA didn’t have stupid sparkly stalkery vampires in it. It’s a better blend of old fantasy with newer urban kicks.

Belfire’s titles are giving me a boost, too. We just released KV Taylor’s Liam, the first in The Family series. It took me in a different direction than most for modern vampires, Gianni and Liam are proper old-timey blood sucking lurking in the dark vampires. And they’re in love. And it’s good. I hesitate to say it, but I think KV surpassed her work in Scripped with Liam.

Right now, I’m working on Shawn Oetzel’s next release, a YA adventure super-hero novel. I’ve just finished the finals on J. Aaron Parish’s Where the Sun Don’t Shine short fiction collection and am waiting for the proofs to be returned. David Day’s Tearstone is sitting in the same folder, just waiting for proofs, and then both are ready for release. I’m also excited to be wrapping up the main part of edits and formats on Barry Napier’s next poetry release, Sleepmaps.

It’s an exciting spring, and I’m eager to see what’s next!

While we wait, why don’t you check out The Family: Liam, KV Taylor’s first in the series?
