Raised rural, remember? Making do and putting up were phrases I heard a lot. Nevertheless, this first book is going to come in handy if our dream of a homestead ever becomes a reality.

Recently, my daughter was given three books that interest us greatly, as explained above. The first three editions of the Foxfire books settled into her hands, and will be part of our summer reading material.

In the late 1960s, Eliot Wigginton and his students from grades nine and ten created the magazine Foxfire. Through this endeavor, they’ve preserved the traditional folk culture of the Southern Appalachians. Foxfire Magazine is still available today, and though I only link the first three books here, there are 12 in the series.

Creating the Low-Budget Homestead: Steven Gregerson – If you’ve ever thought about pursuing a self-sufficient lifestyle on your own rural homestead or survival retreat but feared you didn’t have the money or skills to do it, you simply must read this book.
