Breathing with Stephen King
Before things got so busy, I was reading six to ten books a week. It allowed my brain to process something else besides red marks and short stories.
I haven’t been reading outside of slush and editing for a long time. In fact, I bought several books back in August or July that I haven’t even taken out of the shopping bag – they’re still in the bag, on a shelf. I feel kinda bad about that, and considering who the publisher is, I’m not even sure the authors will see the royalties from the purchases. :-/
I need to have some relaxation time. Twice yesterday I became so tense over some things that were said that don’t even directly involve me, I nearly said some really nasty things to someone I really care about. So – it’s break time.
I’m going to take a break and breathe with my life-time favorite author, in the 2011 Stephen King Challenge. The goals are simple (for me anyway) – six to twelve of his books before the end of December. I’m sure I can handle that. If I’ve the time, I may post reviews and whatnot at the official site (see sidebar), and here too.
Maybe you’d like to tell me, in the comments below, which of his new titles – either The Dome or Just After Sunset – I should pick up? I’d like to add one new title while I’m at it.
I believe I’ll start with The Dark Half!

I’d avoid The Dome at all costs. Seriously.
Hey, Jodi:
My wife loved “Under the Dome”, though I haven’t read it yet. It’s quite huge. “Just After Sunset” is a great collection, and in my opinion, some of the best short fiction Stephen King has done in a long time. I’ve always appreciated his short fiction, especially the early stuff. This collection does not disappoint. “N” is a long one, and worth the read. They’re all great.

Go with “Just After Sunset”. The stories are worth a read, easier to get down in a short time, one at a time and honestly, “Under The Dome” is a serious time commitment. It will take a huge chunk out of your month. I have a signed copy of it I keep staring at, knowing it will take me weeks to read it. I have a hardcover, so maybe a soft cover wouldn’t seem so daunting. They’re both worth a read from what I hear. Also, read “Duma Key”, it’s like being with King during his heyday.
Have fun and good luck on the challenge.
This post actually convinced me to dig up my copy of “Just After Sunset” again and re-read the stories. Still just as entertaining to read as the first time. King may not think “Willa” is one of the best stories in the collection but I do. I’m a sucker for his “Bag of Bones” type stories though.
Hmmm. From everything I’ve gathered thus far, it seems like women like Under the Dome, and men don’t. Men like Just After Sunset… LOL
Just After Sunset it is.
Thanks everyone!
