9 of 52 Weeks – Worth a Thousand Words
I use a lot of pictures when I’m writing. Either to get a visual on the mental image I have for a setting, or to work around for characterization.
These are some of the shots I’ve used to inspire me for Windygates – still a work in progress!

Highway 31, southbound from Jct. 3/240 at Darlingford. This shot is about five-ten miles from where my grandfather was born. (Photo courtesy Wiki/RKehler)

Known in our family as the “Martindale Bridge” as my grandfather’s older brother helped to install it, this crossing is less than a half-mile from the family homestead, where my grandfather was born, and where the bulk of Windygates takes place. (Photo courtesy Government of Manitoba/Wiki)

Leary Brickworks, Pumpkin Creek/Snow Valley w. Roseisle; although fifty-odd miles separates the two ends of the Pembina Valley, this particular area of it is spectacularly pretty, and the energy is AMAZING. No kidding. In the Windygates world, this piece of the valley is only a half-mile from the homestead. (Photo source Manitoba Heritage/Ina Bramadat)

This house is actually comprised of two homes moved to the current location and connected by that center piece. Both houses were moved from town, down through the country and twisty, winding roads to sit back against Pumpkin Creek. Once a bed & breakfast, it’s currently for sale. Although it bears little resemblance to the photos I’ve seen of the homestead, I’ve used it as a guideline for the building in Windygates.

Hope you enjoyed the little trip around the Windygates world… perhaps this summer I’ll get in some of my own shots!
