Worries, research and giggles
I’ve been trying to get a call through to either my aunt or my cousin in the last couple of days. They live around St. Adolphe/Isle Des Chenes respectively, and there’s been some disturbing shots of both places in the news lately. In fact, it was announced at some point that 800 people have been evacuated from the region.
The only news I’ve had of the family is that back in late March, my aunt and her husband were moving some stuff out of their sheds, to keep ‘em safe, and then they went on a trip to see my cousin (he’s stationed at Petewawa in Ontario) for his birthday.
Frankly, I’m worried.
I know they’ve been prepared each time the river has flooded, but damn, this year is the worst since they all moved out there.
And I’m very happy that we live this far in-land… I showed the girls the town where the biggest ball-rivals live, Morris, currently enclosed in a ring-dike, with waters cutting them off on all sides. That’s only 30 minutes from here.
So, there’s going to be recipes in my current chapbook project. The problem I’m having with that, is I don’t know how much of my repertoire I’m going to need to test (ha) to include. Which brings me back to the dear folks that stop by this blog for whatever reason.
Tell me… do you eat mainly meat, mainly vegetables, mainly sugar? Combination of all, or some? Check the poll, please. And I’m also considering that what I consider traditional foods for various gatherings may not be traditional at all… so, check that one, too.
I expect I’ll need to work out nutrionals and calories per serving for these recipes, and I have no doubt I’m going to regret having stepped onto this path, when I step onto the scale at my next appointment.
Oh well.
We were all sitting in a tiny exam room yesterday (Care is still sick, and we may finally have a proper diagnosis, maybe) waiting for the even tinier doc (Rhia’s bigger than the doc – the woman was TINY!) when I decided to spring their parts in this project on them. I’d been hinting, but being teenagers, they weren’t listening.
Rhia was full of questions about what she’s been asked to do and – in true writer fashion – she asked what her royalties would be. o_O
I was thinking: am I really going to have to draw up contracts for my kids to be involved in this? Apparently. The little thing is shrewd, too- cover over net, mind. Obviously she was eavesdropping on some of my more fiduciary conversations in the past. She wants to be an actress and I’m thinking she might be better off as a lawyer.
Then she started giggling in excitement, and it broke the spell.

I hope yr relatives are alright. Maybe you can’t get through cause a lot other people are calling that area?
Yr kids asking for contracts and royalties is hilarious. Hilarious!
Thanks, Kevin… I think the lines are saturated, most of our phone lines run underground. It’s just not a good time over there. Hopefully we’ll hear how they are once the water recedes again.
