Heinie Flu

10 November 2009 7 Comments

I know, I know, H1N1. Still, when they first started referring to it as H1N1 in the news, one of the baseball coaches called it heinie, and it stuck. We won’t know until Monday if that’s what we’ve got (and Care is the only one that’s been tested officially) but meanwhile, we’re all scratchy, grouchy and really rather sleepy. ;)

So, I’m quite far behind with NaNo, and I don’t know if I can make it up, considering I have two anthologies and a novel in edits right now. I’ve done the front and back for Mr. The Dunwoody Sir’s cover and while it’s no Empire cover (DAMN! That was a fine, fine cover!!!) it’s pretty darn good.

Dead Bells Front

I did take a break last night to work on the front for Dead Bells.

It’s the font, maybe. Or the current amount of space between top and bottom (but there will be something going there…) but I’m not sure I like it. Hit the comments and let me know what you think. :)

Back to the NaNo for an hour before I dive into edits. I’d hug you, but I’d probably make you sick.

hmmm…

c’mere… >;-)

Been there done that – you have my sympathies and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

    Go rest.

Love the image. Font’s not bad. But something about it doesn’t seem to work. It’s like there’s too much dead space. And I don’t personally care for the way the title just barely covers the point of the tower rather than sitting above it. Have you tried running the title vertical parallel to the tower? Don’t know if it would work, but it might help balance it a bit.

OK, perhaps more comment than you wanted, and my forte is more page design (newsletter, newspaper, etc) than book covers. Take it or leave it…probably the latter.

I like the cover, very grim! : )

I love the image. The font isn’t bad, but your right, there is something about it that is off. I’m a Fontaphile, and I went through some of my font collections. As I don’t know what you have, I know you may or may not have them, I found somr that might be worth looking at over a hot bowl of soup or cup of tea:

    Banshee
    Cracked
    Floydian
    Garish Monde
    LucifersPension
    Nosfer
    Parchment
    Royal Pain

Just some ideas to help out in what way I can

First and foremost, I hope you are feeling better.

The image is amazing. Really haunting.

The font seems off. Almost happy? The 3-sided box between the steeple, byline, and title really “trap” my eye when I look at it. I know you said something would adorn the blank space, but I think the title would look nice stacked on that side (dead on one line, bells on the other). Just ideas.

    Cheers.

    Hey ya’ll!

Thanks for the suggestions – Will, I just shot you an email ;)

I think I’m going to play with fonts, sizing and arrangement of text as soon as I have some time again. Even if I do put what I want to put in the dead space, it’ll still be… well, there’s going to be too much space.

    Thanks again!

God, the flu has to let up EVENTUALLY. I don’t mind, I’ll hug you anyhow!

I’m late on the draw, but I do really love that image, and am not even sadder that I couldn’t think up anything clever to submit. Be interested to see which new font you choose, too, as I agree with the above comments from Will and Aaron.

Really though, the image is JUST the thing.
