It’s melting in New Bedlam

And for once, I actually mean it literally. Temperatures soared overnight (steadily climbing since Friday) and as a stark contrast to Thursday’s temps (-47C w/windchill) it is now +1C.

That bearing in mind, I’d like to give a push to the Spring Thaw Fiction Contest we’re running over at The New Bedlam Project. Entries are slowly trickling in, and we’re getting really excited! You’ve still got time to enter, so put your thinking caps on:

General Information:

New Bedlam is celebrating its bicentennial.

The town has expanded their annual spring festival to include a parade, street vendors, music acts, carnival rides and sideshows. They’re even having a “Queen of Bedlam” beauty contest.

Imaginations can go wild with this one, so long as they keep to the general guidelines for
the ‘zine, and this theme.

Initial judging will be handled by staff, much like regular submissions – only those stories actually maintaining the theme we are looking for will be added to the ‘long-list.’ Those that aren’t will be rejected at any time over the course of the contest. The field will be narrowed to the ‘short-list’ (otherwise known as the top ten), and those will be sent to the celebrity judge panel. Winning entries will be kept secret (except to the winners themselves) until the anniversary issue is released.

Contest runs from September 1st to January 29th.

Entries must be sent to: submissions@newbedlam.com and the subject line MUST be: Contest – Title – Author. If it is not formatted as it is here, the entry will be lost. Plain and simple. There is a very specific filter set, and it will only save entries as described above.

Prize packages are being collected at this time, so watch the website for more information.

A random draw winner of the top five stories will receive a subscription to Necrotic Tissue. The Grand Prize winner will receive a prize package plus pro-payment for the entry. Runners up will receive prize packs and be paid at regular rate. These top five will be published in the anniversary issue of New Bedlam, to be released April 1st, 2010.

Questions:

Please use the form on the Contact Us page at the website for everything except entries.

I kept hoping I’d find time to do something for this but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen :c(

It normally takes me about a month to go from first draft to submitted piece so a couple of weeks is probably not going to do it – not while I’m also working on editing Dark Pages, reading a book for review, and completing a major project in the day job.

    Not fair…

Bah, I so wish the idea I actually came up with fit the theme! Partly because I’m impatient like that, and partly because it’s just too cool. D’oh.

So how did New Bedlam manage to pop above freezing before we did?

    Hmmmm…street vendors. Wheels turning…

BT – next time! ;) I can hardly wait to see the ToC for Dark Pages, btw!

Katey – I hope you’re writing the idea for the ‘zine itself, then.. ;) I think we’ll be opening earlier than April, so… *hinthintnudgenudge*

Aaron – I don’t know how we got so warm, but we did. My mother and brother are saying El Nino, I’m saying it’s a prelude to a nasty February & March…

Turning wheels are good things! Keep goin’!

Oh yeah, I’ve been sitting on one to send you for months. Is it February? I saw on your blog I think that you were considering it. Eeee!

Yep, I think both of ‘em will be open, Belfire and TNBP, February 1st. TNBP for sure, because we want plenty of time to read for the July issue. :)

Can’t wait to see what ya got, Katey!
