Lavie Tidhar’s Hebrew Punk – Pre-orders Open!
From the BigBorg dude (Jason Sizemore) himself:
HebrewPunk by Lavie Tidhar (Preorders)
Allow me a moment to shill.
HebrewPunk by Lavie Tidhar is a collection of two short stories, one novelette, and one novella. The stories amount to 35,000 words of fiction. The title is a reflection of the sub-genre that Lavie is introducing to the world.
The Rabbi. The Tzaddik. The Rat. In HebrewPunk, Jewish mythology is mixed with fantastical and science fiction settings. It’s quite a unique combination.
“The Heist” is the first of the four stories. It introduces our Jewish heroes. I think of it as Ocean’s Eleven meets urban fantasy. Except darker and infinitely more exciting. Indeed, there is a heist, our crew is assembled, and the action takes off from there.
“Transylvania Mission” drops us into the middle of Eastern Europe during WWII. Here, The Rat must face down the insidious Nazi, Mengale, in a gripping and vicious finale inside Vlad “The Impaler” Tepes’s old castle.
“Uganda” is a thoughtful, quiet piece that relates The Rabbi’s experiences while traveling with missionaries in search of a new homeland for the Jewish people.
“The Dope Fiend” centers around The Tzaddik. The Tzaddik is a wonderfully flawed in the pulp hero tradition. He finds himself the target of an angel’s retribution in a muddy early-20th century London. This story grabs you and doesn’t let up until you’re dropped into the cleverly crafted climax.
HebrewPunk is enthusiastically blurbed by the likes of Ellen Datlow, Kage Baker, Adam Roberts, and Paul DiFillipo; if you’re a fan of fantasy or a fan of short story collections, then this one is one I guarantee you will enjoy.
