Plagiarist in sight…Warning!
I was recently tipped off (via twitter) to proof that David “Doc” Byron has been plagiarizing works, presumably from people that have submitted to one of his many little for-the-love projects.
This is the blog post that Jerrod posted a link to:
Pin The Tail On This Plagiarist
For those that don’t know, Doc Byron goes under the names Doc Byron, Iron Dave, David Boyer (real name), David Brookes, Leo Wolfe, Jerry Burkette and runs various fiction webzines, most notably New Voices in Fiction (used to be New Voices in Horror, or the other way around…) and is usually referred to as NVF.
If you have ever had the bad fortune to have sent your work to this man in any form, please check your resources (google, etc.) and make sure he hasn’t plagiarized you!

God, how harrowing is that? How do people think they can get away with it…?
WTF? Why does anyone steal fiction? It’s like ripping dreams from one’s sleep.
Katey – I know, right? I’ve gone through all of the submissions that I have in archive, just in case he’d submitted under one of his pseudonyms that I recently found out about. There’s one story online, credited to him, that I’m sure I’ve read elsewhere and by someone else.
Aaron – I have no idea what he’s trying to do with this. It seems as though he thinks he can get away with it, he even has at least one of Lisa Morton’s short stories. He claims Stoker recs for two of the stolen stories, and she looked them up. One has received 3 recs, but whether that was under the original author’s name or Byron’s I’m not sure.
This is the guy that did the memorial book for Joe McGee, making money off Joe’s death. He did the same thing when Forrest Ackerman died, apparently going through the man’s guestbook for contacts in the days after his death…
I’m SO glad you posted this. I didn’t know about the Joe McGee book. I attended Joe’s wake.
I believe it’s available via Whitmore Publishing.
Things are being taken down left and right today, thank goodness! Of course, Lulu leaves everything up…*eyerollage*
He you looked for a David Brookes yet? Sometimes he used that name too.
Yep – nothing more in either submissions area with any of his pseudos. When I take a coffee break from Belfire/TNBP stuff I’ve been running random lines through google and the archives, just to be sure.
Wow. I’m not sure if anything of mine has been plagiarized, but when I google my stuff I don’t find it under any other name but mine, so I take that as a good sign–obscurity has its perks.
Regardless, I’ve long wondered at the ineptitude of plagiarists who lift other people’s works and claim them, as if a simple search string in today’s age can’t sniff them out.
Actually lulu.com are quite good at pulling things down, when he breached his own contract, I went hunting for the PODs that he used all of them were pretty quick at pulling the books down. Here’s the email he got from LULU.COM after I advised him.

His reaction …. get ready for a true Iron Dave (rusty dave)
HAPPY NOW? NOW I CANT EVEN SELL IT WITH A NEW COVER OR WITHOUT YOUR NAME IN THE CREDITS. ME AND MY CONTRIBUTORS SURE ARE NOT HAPPY. YOU ARE AN IDIOT.
Gef – be thankful! There’s another pseudonym pop up today, Jack Burnett. That’s actually how Deadly Dolls is listed at Amazon, under that name.
Stephen – I think it’s down under his own name, but he’s got it on Lulu under the Jack Burnett name.
Good news (I guess?) is that you’re listed as the cover artist now.
His titles (that I could see tonight, under David Byron) only total 83, so they have been pulling things down. Lisa Morton mentioned that there were 138 yesterday.
Webs.com have started freezing some of his sites as of today due to my email to him, I’m also tracking down some of the artists that he’s flogged for his covers. The reason I know this is that one of his book covers features art by Craig Mullins who did tons of concept art for Dark Knight Returns, as well as Bioshock 2. As if Byron could afford an artist like this!!! Might have to hit a massive art magazine … and see if I can get a interview done that warns about artists losing their work. Might just be the next plan of action … that and deviantART … now that would be fun!
Excellent, Stephen, good work! If you come across any more pseudonyms, please let us know, k?
