RANT PG Warning: And people wonder why…

…I’m not christian.

You know what? I know there are good christian folks out there. I was raised by good christian folks that knew the meaning and spiritual connection behind the words, and I work with some of the most wonderful christians I’ve ever come across. I was also brought up with and worked with the other side of that coin, the ones that think they’re gonna pave their way to heaven by giving their cash to whatever freak with an accent comes along. I’ve argued passages in the bible that local baptists refused to admit was there until I pulled out my HUGE Jimmy Swaggart special (a gift from the holy-roller uncle when I was a child, and despite the breach in family and beliefs, I treasure it) and pointed it out to them. I gave as good as I got – even after they told Rhia her mother was going to hell – I walked away.

It wouldn’t surprise me that these people below are being supported by those half-strung, half-cocked twits.

Nevertheless, when I hear about things like these Westboro Baptists coming up here to protest at the funeral of a man brutally murdered not 30 minutes from my own home – I raise my voice to Morrighan and thank her for finding me when she did.

How the fuck does that t**t know anything – she doesn’t, actually – about Tim McClean, or his family? Who the fuck does she think she is? I hope – I pray to my Goddess – that she’s arrested, charged and detained. I don’t care what the charge is, the McClean family does not deserve this, nor did he deserve to die.

Maybe Phelps and his brood need to look in the mirror some day and ask why America was targeted. Why has your god and Yeshua deserted you, bitch?

Don’t you fucking tell me Canadians deserve to die – cha-ching – because we’re rebels, and then expect us to let you walk in here like you’re the true path to enlightenment. I’ve got a huge, white Canadian ass that needs a big, fat baptist kiss, before that’ll ever happen.

Go with your bad self, hon! :D That is fucking bullshit. Wait until I show Steve this! That death has been haunting me. That poor kid. Just trying to get home, on a bus, and holy shit. I can’t get it out of my mind. So sad. :(

Applause and a hearty amen from me and Danu! ;-)

    hehe

Your fellow pagan hippie type. :D

Hey now, don’t go lumping us all in with those wackos.

I’m a Southern Baptist, a Christian married to a Buddhist, and to toss into the mix, I regularly tell people they’re goign to hell. Not in a holier-than-thou way, but more as a method of confusion. Walk up toa random guy on the street, wait at a corner for the crosswalk to clear, and before crossing idly say “You’re going to burn, sir.” Resist the temptation to look back, just know he’s wearing a mixture of horror and confusion on his face.

Back to my point, however. Most Christians, and in fact most Baptists, don’t support the Reverend Phelps and his congregation of loonies. Most of his congregation is, in fact, made up of his own family. Nobody likes them, and to consider this man a Christian is more of an affront to my faith, and to Christians of all denominations. He’s a Baptist, and a Christian, in the same way Hitler was Jewish.

This man is a publicity hound, a stumbling, stuttering cadaver that feeds on grief as long as it can thrust his upside-down view of the world into a spotlight. He’ a leech on the belly of society, gorging himself on each subsequent tragedy. I would like nothing more than to view a continous loop of his time in hell for the bad name he has foisted off on the Baptist church.

Are Baptists perfect? Well…no. No church is. Look at the Popes who had mistresses, priests with young boys on the mind instead of parables, or Middle-Eastern faithful who seem to think God told them to strap a bomb on their chests and take out a Starbucks. Think of those faiths that practice arcane, anti-social beliefs. Hell, my thin branch of Christianity was founded on the belief that good white people shouldn’t have to worship in a Lord’s House of mixed race. We were wrong.

And, in a lot of cases, we’re still wrong. No more wrong than any other religion with its nutbags, though. I know you didn’t judge all Christians, but it seemed to tar Baptists with the same brush. All a church has to do, in order to be considered “Baptist” and able to use such a name, is dunk the faithful instead of sprinkling them. Simply being “Baptist” doesn’t mean we’re connected.

Personally, I’ve never seen the passage of the New Testament that tells the faithful they should mvoe into the world and make hard times, emotionally and physically, more difficult for those they don’t agree with. I’ve seen many passages preaching compassion, understanding, and exhibiting values of the faith so that the message can be spread.

These people aren’t Christian. Were it likely his views would be presented as often if he was Jewish, it would be the Westboro Synagouge with their crazy old Rabbi. Pagan faiths would find themselves with a “Westboro Coven” (I’m not even sure if that term really applies, but it sounds good!).

One of the strangest things is that, in some of my writing, I have this habit of attacking the organized Church. These people are the reason why. My faith and belief in the good of man, in my personally chosen Lord, and in the things that have come to good in my life, however, keep me believing. To say that a Baptist is a “thumper” because of this one man is to say all Muslims are terrorists because of Osama Bin Laden.

Now, since that’s out of the way, good rant!

Louise – *hugs* I know, it’s been at the edges of my mind all week.

Hey JC – good rant, yourself! :D I can totally see you doing that, btw. Now I’m going to have to try it, too. >:)

See, this is what I mean by knowing the meaning and spiritual connection, live and let live, etc.. I didn’t mean to sound like I was lumping, but I imagine I did. I musta ;) Is it possible to have pentecostal baptists? That’s what I’ve seen (barring the handful that broke with the local church I mentioned above – they are sweethearts!): they are full of fire and brimstone, decrying everyone around them that doesn’t agree with their views.

Anyhoo, for making it seem like I was lumping, I do apologize.

I had a bunch of Baptists try and argue that all fossils had been made at one time by the great biblical flood, then said that the earth had inflated and deflated in some sports, causing fossils to appear in their different ‘eras.’ I also argued about the realism of the Bible, saying that I could easily write something, go to a third-world country, then be ‘God.’ They were even about to start arguing about how we didn’t really involve and that we were made in seven days, then my mother said she needed to make dinner, lol.

These Baptists couldn’t keep up with me. And you know the worst part? They asked MY MOTHER where I got all of my knowledge from INSTEAD of me. That’s what pissed me off.

I don’t like religious people. I live in THE WORST religious town I’ve been in (well, for more than a few minutes,) and absolutely hate the way people use ‘God’ to defend all their claims.

I’m not saying that religion is a bad thing, but there are limits (AKA the crazy lady in THE MIST, Carrie White’s Mother…)

Ugh, I don’t think I’ve ever really hated anyone like those people. I’m not sure why they are tolerated when their “free speech” is obviously just hate speech.

The news item was updated, stating the group is to be blocked at the border. Reports were also made that the group is already in Canada, in Alberta, and that fed-ex had delivered protest materials to someone in Winnipeg already.

I don’t often wish violence on people – but these aren’t people, these are something as far removed from people as I can think (and I think bad things for a living). Why can’t they just go drink their kool-aid and move on to whatever reward will await them? Bah…

I feel EXACTLY the same way and everyone knows I’m the biggest peacenik around.

Another update. The funeral was held today, and instead of protesters showing up – hundreds of strangers showed to protect the family and friends of Tim McClean.
